THE BRAIN-GUT AXIS LINKING INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE WITH ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION: THE INFLAMMATION-MICROBIOME NETWORK

CRP/ROU21-01, Contract no CRP02/019 / 2021

31/12/2022 – 31/12/2025

Total value of the contract: 144.709,44 RON (29.300 EURO)

The main aim of the project is to develop a strong interdisciplinary network among EU research groups and clinicians to obtain preliminary results to better understand the molecular crosstalk between IBD and mood disorders at the level of inflammatory signaling pathways, given the microbiome alterations.

The achievement of the scientific objective of this project will allow identifying molecular patterns that may be unique to IBD or associated with the complex phenotypes of IBD in comorbidity with anxiety and depression. The work plan is detailed in the panel below.

The work plan of the project

The implementation of the project is performed through collaboration between a Romanian research center (National Institute of Pathology Victor Babes) with the support of a clinical institute, and the Computational Biology group of ICGBE in Trieste, Italy. All the involved institutions benefit from the ICGEB support for the training of the next generation of scientists in systems biomedical research. This will promote the network among European scientists in clinical, preclinical and bioinformatics research and the integration of the existing knowledge for guiding collaborative research and future submission of large-scale projects. From the scientific point of view the expected results of this project will allow to identify molecular patterns that may either be unique to IBD or associated with the complex phenotypes of IBD in comorbidity with anxiety and depression.
